THE LINE is an ambitious smart city development launched by Mohammed bin Salman, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia and Chairman of NEOM. The city is being developed in the northwestern region of the country, along the Gulf of Aqaba, and forms a major part of the wider NEOM initiative. The NEOM project was officially announced on October 24, 2017, as one of Saudi Arabia’s most transformative development plans.
Throughout the construction process of THE LINE, a wide range of container-based site facilities will be utilized to support thousands of employees working on the project. These facilities are expected to include office units, accommodation buildings, dining halls, social spaces, prayer areas, training centers, and various support structures required for daily operations.
NEOM is a large-scale development initiative located in Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk Province. Covering approximately 26,500 square kilometers, the project aims to create a futuristic economic and innovation hub that will redefine urban living, technology, and sustainability in the region.
THE LINE is a next-generation urban development planned as part of NEOM in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Developed by NEOM Company, the city has been designed to introduce a completely new approach to urban living. The project is envisioned as being significantly larger than New York City in terms of overall development scale.
The master plan includes luxury tourism destinations, a global commercial center, advanced industrial zones, and extensive renewable energy infrastructure. The city is expected to be completed by 2030 and is designed to extend along a linear route on the Red Sea coast.
Located on Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, Sharm El Sheikh is one of the most recognized tourism destinations in the world. Due to its strategic position across the Red Sea and its ambitious tourism infrastructure, THE LINE is expected to emerge as a strong competitor for regional and international visitors once fully developed.
Despite its visionary goals and investment value exceeding 500 billion dollars, the NEOM project has also faced criticism. Concerns have been raised regarding the relocation of local communities and allegations involving surveillance and pressure on residents during the land acquisition process. These issues have generated discussions among international human rights organizations and observers.
One of THE LINE’s most distinctive features is its integration with nature. Residents will have immediate access to green spaces and natural environments, with most destinations reachable within a short walking distance. The design aims to preserve surrounding landscapes while ensuring uninterrupted views of mountains, skies, and open spaces.
By reducing urban congestion and minimizing carbon emissions, THE LINE seeks to provide a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle. The project introduces a human-focused urban model that challenges conventional city planning and offers an alternative vision for future generations.
Unlike traditional cities, the emphasis is placed on people rather than transportation infrastructure. The city is planned to be approximately 200 meters wide, 170 kilometers long, and 500 meters above sea level. Upon completion, it is expected to accommodate around nine million residents.
A high-speed transportation system will enable travel from one end of the city to the other in approximately 20 minutes, while essential services and amenities will remain within a five-minute walking distance.
The absence of conventional roads and private vehicles is expected to eliminate many sources of urban pollution. Operations throughout the city will rely heavily on renewable energy systems, helping reduce environmental impact and maintain high air quality standards.
The preservation of green corridors and open spaces will further contribute to a healthier living environment for residents and visitors.
THE LINE has been designed with advanced microclimate principles in mind. Careful consideration has been given to sunlight exposure, shading, airflow, and natural ventilation. Extensive green areas distributed throughout the city will enhance comfort levels for residents, workers, and tourists year-round.
Beyond its residential and tourism ambitions, THE LINE aims to become a major international business destination. The project is designed to attract leading global brands and innovative companies by offering a modern, highly livable environment where work, leisure, and daily life are seamlessly integrated.
Rather than being dominated by the pressures of traditional urban business districts, the city seeks to provide balanced spaces where productivity and well-being coexist. Construction activities are expected to involve approximately 380,000 workers before the project reaches completion.
